Bob Bryla is an Oracle 9i and 10g Certified Professional with more than 20 years of experience in database design, database application development, training, and Oracle database administration. He is the primary Internet database designer and an Oracle DBA at Lands’ End in Dodgeville,

He has also been known to watch science fiction movies and read science fiction novels in his spare time. Kevin Loney, Director of Data Management for a major financial institution, is an internationally recognized expert in the design, development, administration, and tuning of Oracle databases. An Oracle developer and DBA since 1987, he has implemented large-scale transaction processing systems and data warehouses.

He is the author of numerous technical articles and the lead author or coauthor of such best-selling books as Oracle: The Complete Reference. He regularly presents at Oracle user conferences in North America and Europe, and in 2002 was named Consultant of the Year by ORACLE Magazine.

About the Author

Having studied physics at UCL, David Kurtz was introduced to Oracle in 1989 and spent 6 years in a software house as an Oracle Developer/DBA, working on assurance and insurance software. In 1996, Kurtz joined PeopleSoft in the UK, starting out in support and gradually moving into consultancy over several years. Since there was virtually no internal documentation about how PeopleSoft related to the database, Kurtz began learning it by himself. This led to fixing performance problems in PeopleSoft systems. Soon enough, Kurtz was spending all of his time on performance-related consultancy.

Kurtz left PeopleSoft in 2000 and set up Go-Faster Consultancy Ltd.Since then, Kurtz has learned to apply principles of wait-based tuning to the database and to the PeopleSoft layers atop the database. Kurtz has been a member of the UK Oracle User Group since 1994 and became chairman of the UNIX SIG in 2000. He presents regularly at PeopleSoft and UKOUG conferences and SIG meetings.
